Bazar del Sábado

In this section, we share our favorite recommendations for the Saturday Bazaar in San Ángel, a living tradition where art, design, and Mexican creativity meet every weekend. Since the 1960s, artists have gathered around Plaza San Jacinto to offer their work, and each Saturday the neighborhood awakens with vibrant energy. Cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, galleries, cafés, and restaurants create a setting filled with charm and cultural depth. We also highlight three valuable museums in the area that often go unnoticed. Whether you explore San Ángel on your own or with a guide, this section becomes your insider companion to experience the very best of the Bazar del Sábado and its surroundings.

BEGIN AT:

1) Iglesia y Museo de El Carmen
• Visit the church for beautiful examples of Baroque art.
• The museum, one of my personal favorites in the city, is located next door in a former 1620s Carmelite monastery, featuring remarkable architecture and a small yet valuable colonial art collection.

*MAGDA
Right next to the museum, this lovely restaurant offers a beautiful terrace and views. I recommend stopping here for a drink or light snacks.

2) Mercado del Carmen (Calle Amargura)
A vibrant space inside a former hacienda, home to Mexican designer shops and diverse dining options.

3) Shops & Restaurants
Additional Mexican designer boutiques located within another former hacienda nearby.

Fábrica Social
Across the park, this outstanding fair-trade project offers beautiful Mexican textiles and embroidered designs in a 100% ethical shop.

4) Casa del Obispo
A charming former bishop’s residence from the colonial period, featuring a lovely courtyard.

5) Iglesia de San Jacinto
A colonial Dominican church, one of the few remaining traces of the 17th-century monasteries, with a peaceful courtyard.

6) Contemporary Mexican Designers’ Shops & Street Market
Don’t miss the shops next to the church. One of my personal favorites is the first one, recognizable by its tall steps and Frida altar.

7) Bazar del Sábado (Saturdays only)
Located inside a former conquistador’s home, this iconic market has been open since the 1960s and showcases outstanding contemporary Mexican art and design every Saturday.
• Inside the courtyard, you’ll find OXA, a charming restaurant ideal for drinks or lunch.

*SAKS Restaurant
Next door to the Bazar, this traditional restaurant is worth visiting for its beautiful colonial architecture, later adapted in the late 19th century.

*Casa del Risco
Adjacent to SAKS, this cultural center features a stunning fountain decorated with mother-of-pearl and Mexican and Asian ceramic pieces, set within a peaceful courtyard.

8) De Corazón México
A wonderful boutique offering high-end handcrafted pieces from Oaxaca, especially fine clay works.

9) Art Market on the Park (Jardín del Arte)
Founded in the 1960s by artists who chose to sell their work independently of galleries, this open-air art market remains a vibrant cultural tradition.

UBER OR WALK TO:

San Angel Inn Restaurant
A former colonial hacienda and one of my favorite places in the city. Explore its courtyard, corridors, back gardens, and private chapel for a glimpse into colonial domestic life.
They are also famous for having the best frozen margaritas in the city.

Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera & Frida Kahlo
Located right next door to the restaurant, this was the couple's home after their marriage.
• It is considered the first modernist architectural project in Mexico, designed by Juan O’Gorman.
• If open, you’ll enjoy seeing Diego’s studio preserved as he left it until his death in 1957. Even from the outside, the buildings are fascinating, and the cactus fence remains original from 1932.

*Please note: this is not the famous “Blue House” (Casa Azul), which is Frida’s family home located nearby in Coyoacán.
